MINE TRAGEDY
DESPERATE RESCUE EFFORTS United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright JOHANNESBURG, April 28. After having been imprisoned for three and a half days, a miner, W. Anderson and two natives were found alive in the fifteenth level of the new Machavie gold mine at Potchefstroom. The rescue party had been working feverishly to reach the two white miners and 40 natives who were trapped when the old workings were holed permitting water to rush through.
The men were found in a box hole which was below water level, but the imprisoned air had kept back the flood and had enabled the men to breathe. The rescue party subsequently found another European and several natives dead. There is no hope for the rest.
