APPOINTMENT TO SCHOOL STAFF GENERAL NEWS The Waimate High School Board has appointed Miss M. B. Stewart, Bachelor of Home Science, to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Miss Borrie at the beginning of the year. Although Miss Stewart has had only six years actual teaching experience in New Zealand, she has had a wide experience abroad, two and a half years being spent in England for special training during which time she took the opportunity of visiting Germany, Holland, Switzerland and Beligum. Miss Stewart has held the following positions: Lecturer to the Senior class at the Gloucestershire Training Colege of Domestic Science; Adviser to the Domestic Science Students at Bristol University, acting as liaison officer between the University and Training College, and is at present on the staff of the New Plymouth Girls’ High School. GARDEN PARTY At the residence of Mr C. Coventry, a very successful garden party was held. The Rev. A. M. Costain declared the fair open, and wished the Bible classes a successful afternoon. Although the weather was not ideal there was a large attendance of the public to enjoy the beautiful garden and to help in raising funds for the Easter camp. The stall-holders found business very brisk, and the decorated barrows used for cakes and sweets stalls no doubt served as an added attraction to the buyers. Miss Edna Veitch was in charge of the cake stall and Miss Gladys Preece of the sweets stall. A well laden produce stall, conducted oy Misses Nancy Wilson and Margaret Clarke, was well patronised as was the ice-cream and soft-drinks stall run by Misses Enid Clarke and Vera Dolphin. Afternoon tea was served from a buffet by Misses M. Dolphin, P. and M. Tooley, A. Harris and H. Alty. During the afternoon Miss Granger’s junior pupils entertained with clever exhibits of acrobatics and the junior Bible class girls danced “Sellenger’s Round” and the Ribbon dance. The Waimate Silver Band was in attendance and played several selections during the afternoon. BOWLING A very pleasant afternoon was spent at the Waimate Bowling Green on Friday afternoon when the closing of the Ladies’ Bowling Club and the presentation of prizes took place. Mrs J. C. Winning presented the president of the club, Mrs W. P. Wilson, with a bouquet, and Mrs Wilson presented a bouquet to Mrs J. B. Sinclair and asked her to present the prizes. The prizes were presented as follows: Pairs, Mrs Kirk (s) and Mrs Black (lead); Mrs Dash’j prize for runnersup. Mrs Lewis (s) and Mrs T. Stevens (lead); singles championship, Mrs Bray 1. Mrs Richards 2. Mrs Wilson the presented the prizes to the Oamaru tournament rink, which comprised Mesdames Richards, Turnbuli, Gunn and Reeve (s). The president thanked Mr and Mrs J. B. Sinclair and Messrs A. W. Good and Winchester for the help they had extended to the club during the season. Mr Sinclair returned thanks and congratulated Mrs Bray on winning the singles title. After the prize-giving function, a discussion took place as to whether card parties should be held during the winter. It was decided to hold parties twice a month, one to be in the evening and the other in the afternoon. The proceeds will be devoted to the improvement of the pavilion. The following committee was selected to organise the parties: Mesdames Gunn. Reeve. Turnbull. Wilson. Murray and Winning (secretary). PERSONAL Bishop and Mrs West-Watson, who were the guests of Rev. A. H. Acheson and Mrs Acheson at St. Augustine’s Vicarage, returned to Christchurch on Saturday accompanied by Mrs Acheson.

Mr E. A. Murrell, D.8.0.A., F. 1.0. (England), representing Procters, the Premier Opticians, Christchurch, will be visiting Waimate on Saturday, 6th April, and may be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Royal Hotel. Appointments can now be made by ringing uo the Royal Hotel
