CELTIC CLUB’S YEAR ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Celtic Football Club was held last night, Mr L. P. Collins presiding over an attendance of more than 50 members. In moving the adoption of the annual report (previously published), the chairman said that the club had not met with much success in the playing field last year, but the teams had turned out each Saturday and played the game in the best spirit. The third grade team had put up a good showing and he wished to congratulate them and their coach (Mr L. McAteer) on their performance. During the season friendly matches were played with Waimate and Waihi and they had proved most enjoyable. On the social side, the club’s activities had been most successful, the annual ball being a very enjoyable function. The club’s finances were in a very sound position the balance-sheet showing a credit of £6/15/4. Fine Spirit Shown. In seconding the motion the Rev. Father M. A. Murphy, S.M., said that, while the younger players had met with success, he thought the senior players were even more deserving of credit. When a team was on top, it was easy to get players to turn out, but it was a different tale when a club was not so successful. Last season, although the team had not been very successful on the field, the players had turned out every Saturday and they were to be congratulated on their fine spirit in doing their best to see that those teams against which they were drawn were given a good game. That was the true spirit of football. Father Murphy congratulated the club on having concluded the year with a credit balance which reflected great credit on those in charge of the club’s affairs. He expressed a hope that the coming season would also be a highly successful one from all points of view. The report was adopted without discussion.
