FAIRLIE

SCHOOL COMMITTEE A meeting of the committee of the Fairlie District High School was held in the High School on Monday, Mr H. Carlton presiding. Miss E. Moyle, assistant in the Secondary School, wrote tendering her resignation owing to her approaching marriage. It was decided to accept Miss Moyle's resignation with regret, and that a letter be sent to her congratulating ner on her marriage. The Headmaster, Mr C. D. Gilling, reported as follows: —"Last year the school was open only 380 times, whereas during 1933 it was open 407 times. When school closed on December 19 there were 24 on the roll of the Secondary Department and 202 on the roll of the Primary Department, with an average attendance of 23 in the Secondary Department and of 167 in the Primary.” Mr Martin, treasurer, stated that £5 was received from Mr Hill, being the committee’s share from the benefit picture screened. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Hill for the help to the school funds. It was decided that the members of the committee attend a meeting of the Business Men’s Association on Friday, February 8, when arrangements for the picnic will be made in conjunction with the committee of that association.

FIRE BRIGADE Captain Close presided over a good attendance of firemen at the monthly meeting of the Brigade held on Tuesday. In his report the captain stated that the engine and plant was in good order; a practice had been held that night and showed the plant to be in a satisfactory state. There had been no fires or alarms during the month. He urged residents to be careful in the disposal of ashes while everything at present was in such a dry state. A fire starting at the present time would be difficult to control. The caretakers were to be congratulated on the way in which the rooms were kept, also Fireman G. Pinkerton for the tidy condition of the garden. After discussing some minor matters in connection with the welfare of the Brigade, the meeting closed.
