TEMUKA

MEETING OF PROGRESS LEAGUE GENERAL BUSINESS The executive committee of the Temuka Progress League met on Wednesday. Present: Messrs A. N. Hancock (presiding), E. Blackmore, J. T. Smart, W. F. Evans, D. B. Muir, L. Bussell, J. C. Hayhurst and L. Butters (secretary). The president reported that a conference of representatives of sports clubs and the League had been held to discuss the oppointment of a caretaker for the motor-camp and swimming baths. The Tennis Club did not come into the scheme, but the other clubs had agreed and Mr H. Greenfield had been appointed. To assist the Domain Board in the administration of the scheme an advisory committee consisting of one representative of each of the contributing bodies had been set up. The street lighting and decoration for Christmas had been most successful. The sum of £7/17/9 had been collected from among the shop keepers, and there was 5/- yet to come in. The lights had cost £lO but there was also the Borough Council grant of £3 to be collected. The camp fees collected from visiting motorists amounted to more than £l7, which was a record. The caretaker had kept a record of the visiting parties, and 50 had been encamped in the Domain. Members said they had heard much favourable comment on the manner In which the caretaker had carried out his duties, and on the suggestion of Mr Muir it was decided to send him a letter of appreciation. Votes of thanks were passed to Messrs Smart and Evans for their assistance in the decorating of the town with greenery for Christmas. The president asked if members thought that the League should take action in regard to the half-holiday question at the forthcoming Municipal Election. If a poll were desired a petition presented by at least 10 per cent, of the ratepayers would be necessary. , , . Members said that there had been some talk of action being taken in the town. After some discussion the matter dropped. The secretary said that Mr McMillan had asked him to bring forward the suggestion that the League approach the Unemployment Board and urge that Temuka be put on a higher grade of allocation and for the reinstatement of the single men. The Borough Council had already taken action. . .. Mr Butters said that a letter to the Board would bring the matter under its notice, but it was doubtful is any alteration could be effected. It was decided to write to the Board along the lines of the Borough Council’s request, pointing out the danger of a system which tended to concentrate the unemployed in the larger centres and attract them away from the provincial towns. It was decided to note for consideration early next season, the need for lighting and an improved water system as well as a community fireplace.

FUNERAL The funeral took place yesterday at the Temuka Cemetery of Mrs Jane Brookland, wife of Mr Robert Brookland, of Factory Road, who died on Tuesday, aged 81 years. Born in Washfield, Devonshire, England, in 1854, Mrs Brookland came to New Zealand in 1879, a year after Mr Brookland. He had proceded her in a sailing ship and she made the voyage as far as Australia in the steamship Cyphenes. transhipping for the trip to New Zealand. For a year before they were married, Mrs Brookland, whose maiden name was Gardner, lived on the Maniatoto Plains, Otago, and the wedding took place at Timaru in 1880. The couple first lived at Pareora West, where Mr Brookland managed a farm for Mr S. A. Bristol, for a year. They then removed to Beaconsfleld (now Otipua) where they lived for two years and subsequently took up land in the Kingsdown district. In 1906 the Canterbury Frozen Meat Co. purchased their land and they removed after a trip home to England to celebrate their silver wedding, to the Rangitata district. After being seven years there, they again removed, this time to a farm on Milford Road, retiring to Temuka in 1919. All her life Mrs Brookland was a keen supporter of the Anglican Church, being one of the foremost in the foundation of the Kingsdown Church and later prominently identified as a worker for St. Peter’s Church, Temuka. She was a member of the Temuka Mothers’ Union. She is survived by her husband and four daughters—Mesdames J. A. Munro (Pareora), G. C. Chalmers (Rangitata), D. Taylor (Milford) and F. F. McKeown (Springfield), and two sons—Messrs W. Brookland (Timaru) and V. Brookland (Milford), 20 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. At the funeral the services at the house and graveside were conducted by the Rev. C. L. Mountfort. The pallbearers were grandsons—Stuart and Thomas Taylor, Robert, Ralph and Ronald Brookland and Robert Munro. METHODIST GARDEN PARTY Fine weather favoured the annual garden party held at the picturesque home of Mr and Mrs D. Bryan, Gammack Street, to aid the funds of the Methodist Ladies’ Guild. There was a large attendance and the Rev. L. A. Brooks, who presided, welcomed the people and thanked them for their patronage. He also thanked Mr and Mrs Bryan for their generosity during a number of years. During the afternoon, patrons took the opportunity to admire the gardens which, in spite of the weather, were in a very good condition. Under the leadership of Mr S. Cross, an orchestra supplied music. A fancy goods stall was conducted by Mesdames H. G. Ellis and J. Buck. Misses Daphne Levens and Helen Constable were first and second, respectively, in a competition and Miss Dorothy Lloyd won two novelty races. Afternoon tea was served on the lawn. BOWLING. Success crowned the innovation made by the Temuka Bowling Club yesterday when in conjunction with the Temuka Women’s Bowling Club, the men conducted a gala day on the Temuka green. The fixture proved such a happy one in that it afforded excellent opportunity for players of both clubs to meet in the social atmosphere of the green, that it is almost certain that the gala will become an annual one. Competitions occupied the bulk of the afternoon, although several informal games were played. The president of the club (Mr J. B. Davis) presided and at the outset expressed a hope that everyone would find thorough enjoyment during the pfternoon. Play continued until 5.30 o’clock when high tea was served. During this Dr A. S. Mclnnes complimented Mr ar ’ Mrs Davis and the joint committee on the arrangement of such an enjoyable gala which he hoped

would be the forerunner of many others.

After tea several of the Saturday players joined the party and further mixed rink games were played deep into the evening, when supper concluded the day’s programme. The results were:—

ATHLETICS Much interest was shown in interclub athletics when the Temuka Amateur Club held its third meeting at the Domain last evening.
