NEW COUNTRY TRAVERSED

EXPEDITION TO LAKES DISTRICT A party consisting of Messrs A. Jackson (Timaru), and J. T. Holloway and E. J. Lilly (Dunedin), have just returned from a several weeks’ climbing expedition in the Lakes District. The two first named, who climbed several peaks in the Upper Hollyford. including Mt. Christina and an unclimbed peak at the head of the Marion Branch of the Hollyford were joined later by Mr E. Lilly, at Paradise, whence they proceeded up the Dart Valley, 40 miles above Lake Wakatipu. Here ten more ascents were made on the previously unclimbed Barrier Range and several unmapped peaks and glaciers were climbed and traversed. A feature of this new country was the surprising magnitude of the icefields and the location of some large valley glaciers, one of which.' approximately two and a half miles long, was fust explored by the party. Although only four days in as manweeks could be spent in climbing, the weather being very wet, about 12 miles of the Barrier Range peaks were climbed.
