ATHLETICS

CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING From small beginnings, the amateur athletic sport in South Canterbury has gradually increased its hold, until this season it has become firmly established, and a source of interest to a large public. The climax of the season’s activities will be reached on Saturday, when at the Caledonian Grounds, champions from various parts of the South Island will meet to contest some of the principal blue ribbon events. In the cycling section, the Canterbury championship will be decided, and riders whose names are household words—Frank Grose, George Giles, Bob Blakeway. J C. Murray, will be taking part. Entries for the meeting comprise 27 cyclists and 101 runners and field athletes, including 22 women competitors. The two speediest women sprinters in New Zealand, Miss Katie Callinar; and Miss Fay Gudsell will be on the back mark in the women’s 75 and 100 yards. Arnold Anderson, the New Zealand record holder over the 440 yards hurdles will make his first appearance in this event in his home town and will be opposed by J. D. Nelligan.
