CALEDONIAN SOCIETY
MEETING OF DIRECTORS The directors of the South Canterbury Caledonian Society met last night. Present—Messrs R. A. Rodgers (president), S. R. Burns, W. H. Hall. C. Hall, T. Jacobs, J. A. Hay, A. M. Kilgour, R. Oliphant, J. Waldie, N. Bums, Hugh Fraser, J. Simpson and E. J. Fairbrother. Application was made by the South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club for the use of the Caledonian Grounds on February 9 for an amateur sports meeting. In view of the support the Society received from amateur athletics in this district it was hoped that the Society would forego any proportion of the gate money. It was decided that the Society charge 10 per cent, of the gate receipts for the use of the grounds and that if the meeting was not a success the question would be reconsidered. The Timaru Cycling Club was granted £l/1/- towards its prize fund.
Messrs J. G. Duncan, J, Millar, E. Davidson, A. S. Elworthy, S. Anderson, J. Murray, R. Prosser, F. Ward, W. Cole, C. W. Fraser, W. A. Pringle, J. Milligan, and J. Craig were elected members.
The membership badge for the month was won by Mr Hay. Referring to the recent sports, the chairman said that thanks were due to the megaphone stewards (Messrs A. B. L. Smith and W. Duncan), Mesdames Munro and Beck for their care of the dancers, the St. John Ambulance Brigade and the Timaru Highland Pipe Band, who had given their services gratis for some years. The support of the Timaru newspapers was mentioned by Mr Rodgers, special reference being made to the splendid historical review of the Society’s activities written by Mr C. E. Hassall in “The Timaru Herald.”
