HEALTH CAMPS

SOUTH CANTERBURY APPEAL The Mayor of Timaru (Mr T. W. Satterthwaite), as chairman of the Committee of the South Canterbury Health Camp, and Mr W. G. Tweedy (deputy chairman) issue the following appeal: “The Committee of the South Canterbury Health Camp has decided to make an appeal to the public for certain requirements for the camp. As the public is no doubt aware, the object of the camp is to afford some of the less fortunate children in our midst the opportunity of enjoying for three weeks or so in January a holiday which they would not otherwise enjoy. The children are being selected for the camp by the medical health officers from the different primary schools throughout South Canterbury. Those selected, about 20 in number, will be children between the ages of 8 and 12 years, who are delicate and below the normal standard of health, and who, in the opinion of the medical officers, would build up and benefit by the change. The Committee has been granted the use of the school buildings at Geraldine, which, situated as they are in beautiful surroundings, will be ideal in every way for the purpose. Capable and experienced supervisors have already been appointed, and the children will receive every possible care and attention. “The whole object of the camp is to help the children back to health and strength by means of fresh air, sunlight, property selected food and regular habits. The experience of past camps has resulted in a wonderful improvement being shown in the health of those who have attended, and fully justified the Committee in making every effort to ensure a successful camp this year in South Canterbury. “The whole expenses of running the camp are met by donations, while the services of those responsible for the organising and conduct of the camp are all given voluntarily. Part of the required revenue is derived from the sale of Health Stamps, and the Committee earnestly hopes that the public will respond liberally in the purchase of these stamps. One half of the amount realised from this source Is given to the local committee, less a small deduction for necessary departmental expenses. The greater number of stamps sold, therefore, the larger the funds ultimately at the disposal of the committee. In addition to this, however, the committee appeals to the public to assist by making donations in cash or in kind. Cash donations large or small will be gratefully received by any of the Committee, while gifts in kind may be left with any of the following: Mr J. A. Lash, Waimate, Mr R. L. Pugh, St. Andrew’s. Lister’s Motors and Bockaerts Garage Timaru, Cave Stores, Ltd., Cave and Fraser and Co., Albury.

“The camp requires blankets, sheets, cutlery, crockery, bathing suits, games, etc., and foodstuffs of all kinds. The effort is a South Canterbury one, and the Committee feels that there are many residents throughout the whole district who will welcome this opportunity of showing their practical sympathy with the work.

“The Committee sincerely trusts, therefore, that there will be a liberal and immediate response to this appeal which, in the name of the Committee, ought to commend itself to the generosity of the public of South Canterbury.
