LAKE TEKAPO

PIONEER MEMORIAL CHURCH At a meeting of the building committee of the Tekapo Pioneer Memorial Church, the Rev. W. E. D. Davies presided. Also present were Messrs N. Hope, B. N. Murray, R. R. Beauchamp. A. H. Gillingham, Mesdames W. E. Davies, N. Hope and B. N. Murray. Business in connection with the laying of the foundation stone was discussed. It was decided that negotiations be completed with the Timaru Municipal Band to play at the service, information having been received that 23 members of the band would be available. The support of the band at the singing of the hymns and National Anthem would be appreciated by the people present. The following local bodies will be present at the ceremony: The Mayor and councillors of Timaru, Waimate. Temuka and the chairman and members of the Mackenzie County Council. It was decided that steps be taken to arrange for adequate catering. Copies of the order of service are being printed and will be available for those intending to be present. The committee felt strongly that parents should be encouraged to bring their children to the ceremony as His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester was laying the foundation stone of the new church. It was an honour to be esteemed highly by the district generally. Adequate shelter in the event of wet weather would be provided for the Duke. His Lordship the Bishop of Christchurch will conduct the service. The vicar of Fairlie (Rev. W. E Davies) stated that the vicars of Geraldine, Temuka. Otipua, Waihao Downs and Pleasant Point would be present, together with representatives of the Presbyterian and Methodist denominations working in the various centres. The church, though Anglican property, would be available for use by the Presbyterian and Methodist churches, when not in use for Anglican services, subject to the consent of the Vicar and Wardens of Fairlie.
