WAIMATE

MEETING OF COUNTY COUNCIL

GENERAL BUSINESS The monthly meeting of the Waimate County Council was held yesterday. Present: Mr H. B. S. Johnstone (County chairman), Councillors A. S. Elworthy, H. M. Whatman, R. Sinclair, J. J. Dickson, W. Lindsay, N, A. Rattray, A. N. Hayes. Mr Johnstone reported that good progress was being made with the working of repairing the roof of the office building and it was expected that the premises would be ready for occupation before next meeting. A reply had been received from the Treasury that the 12i per cent, rebate on rates would be available for the current year, and would apply only to properties rated and used purely for farming purposes. Word had also been received from the Main Highwavs Board agreeing to permit the crushing of 4,200 yards of screenings in addition to present requirements for the sealing of the Waitaki-Tawai section of the main highway before the plant leaves its present locality. This would obviate the expense which would have to be met were the plant lo leave and have to return to the job. Discussing the engineer’s report Councillor Dickson said that a small culvert was necessary on the Springbrook Road leading to the main highway.—Engineer to report. In regard to Jackson’s road in Ota ; o Riding, Cr Elworthy tabled a letter received from Mr Jackson stating that the Canterbury College Board was prepared to put the road in order if the Council would dedicate same.—lt was resolved to write to Canterbury College enclosing copy of the letter, and stating that the Council was prepared to act when legal and other formalities were complied with. Cr. Hayes said that when the authorities had ordered the removal of the railway lines from the Hakataramea bridge, both the engineer and himself had objected on the grounds that this would encourage speeding. This objection was now being amply borne out, and it seemed only a question of time before a serious accident would occur. When cars went at speed over the bridge, the rattle of the decking could be heard for six or seven miles up the Hakataramea Valley.—The engineer was instructed to bring down a report.

Correspondence The South Canterbury Highways Traffic Group forwarded a copy of the allocation of the cost of a new car for the traffic inspector, the Council’s share of the cost being set down at £59/19/10. The District Highways Council forwarded a copy of a Gazette notice declaring the Otaio-Hunter Road as a main highway. The Mackenzie Returned Soldiers’ Association forwarded an amount of £2/10/- to be subsidised by the Council for work done by a workman at Cave. The Waimate Automobile Association wrote drawing attention to danger caused through gorse obscuring the view at a corner near Woodstock. —It was resolved to forward the correspondence to the settler concerned, and issue instructions for the gorse to be cleared. General Mr A. A. McKenzie was re-appointed dog tax collector, the registration fees being fixed as follows: —Sheep or cattle dogs 2/6; female sheep or cattle dogs 5/-, all other dogs such as sporting or pet dogs 5/-. The chairman and Crs. Lindsay. Rattray and Sinclair were appointed a sub-committee to deal with the cocksfoot tenders. The Council went into committee to discuss the tenders for the purchase of a motor grader, and after a long debate it was decided to recommend to the Main Highways Board that an Auto Grader submitted by Gough, Gough and Maher Ltd. be purchased. At the conclusion of the meeting the chairman said that he wished to acknowledge the work of the office and outside staff and also of the newspapers during the year. They had passed through a strenuous 12 months, but in the history of the Council they had never received better support. The staff had done the work in all departments most efficiently, and the press representatives had supplied good and accurate reports and he would ask them to accept his good wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year. Cr. Sinclair and Mr L. J. Collins (County Clerk) acknowledged the remarks.
