STATE LUNCHEON
OFFICERS OF ITALIAN CRUISER By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, November 19. The captain and officers of the Italian cruiser Armando Diaz were entertained at a State luncheon today. The Minister of Lands, the HonE. A. Ransom, presided. The Hon. J. G. Cobbe, the Hon. C. E. MacMillan, Sir Charles Statham, and the Chief Justice, the Rt. Hon. Sir Michael Myers, were also present. In proposing the toast of “Our Guests,” Mr Ransom extended a cordial welcome to Captain Jachino and the officers and men of the cruiser. He said that Italy and Britain had been traditional allies. Britain not only sympathised with the Italian struggle for independence, but had also offered sanctuary to Garibaldi, Mazzini and other patriotic leaders. Replying, Captain Jachino thanked the people of the Dominion for their hearty welcome and warm hospitality. The visit of the cruiser would further the friendship between the two countries, and he hoped that warships from Italy would visit the Dominion more frequently in future.
