SOCIAL NOTES

Mrs W. Kelly, 8 Thomas Street, is visiting her mother in Waimate. Mrs E. Hunter and Miss Hunter, Christchurch, are staying at the Dominion. Miss Joan Hilary and Miss Dixon, Christchurch, are staying at “The Bungalow,” Wai-iti Road. Mr and Mrs J. Chapman, Fiji, who were the guests of Mrs G. Mathias, Cave, have left for Christchurch. Mrs Milnes, Dunedin, is staying with her sister, Miss Mary Murdoch, Latter Street. Miss C. Pyne, Fairlie, is staying with Mrs Pyne, at “The Bungalow,” Waiiti Road. Miss Nan Orbell, “Levels,” who has been staying with Mrs H. B. S. Johnstone, “Springbank,” Otaio, returned home yesterday. Misses Diana Orbell, “Levels,” and Sylvia and Janet Orbell, “Pentlow,” will leave to-day to attend the Agricultural and Pastoral Show at Dunedin. * Mrs Sinclair-Thomson, “The Crossing,” Woodbury, will arrive to-morrow, to stay with Mrs H. Sinclair-Thomson, Park Lane. Mrs Cecil de Pass and Miss Roie de Pass, Kurow, who are on a visit to Christchurch, will leave on Saturday to stay with Mrs Oakleigh Greenwood, “Hambledon,” Christchurch. Mrs Denis Muir, who has been spending some weeks with her parents, Mr and Mrs G. Webster, Nelson Terrace, will leave to-day for Australia, where she will make her home. Miss Doris Slater, formerly of the staff of the Dunedin city library, who has been appointed librarian of the Gore Coronation library, will take over her duties at the beginning of next month. The engagement is announced of Jean Isabel, elder daughter of the late Mr Alexander Stewart and of Mrs A. Stewart, “Cothill,” Maungati, to Gordon de Laval, younger son of the late Mr and Mrs Frank McKay Allan, Dunedin. In spite of all the advances made in the education of the modern girl in Great Britain, she seems unable to cope with mathematics. This is proved by the result of the open competition for £BOO-a-year posts in the Executive Class of the British civil service. Women captured 10 out of the 80 vacancies offered, but not one of those successful took mathematics, which was among the optional subjects.
