A shipping disaster was averted by the prompt action of the officers on the Dutch steamer Baloeran. bound for Java. Two nights before her arrival at Colombo, a short circuit fire occurred in the first saloon lounge at 11.30 p.m. The passengers were awakened and were alarmed, but there was no panic. The officers succeeded in quickly getting the outbreak under control.
