CATHOLIC DEBATING CLUBS LOCAL TEAM’S SUCCESS A debate on the subject “That the payment of a subsidy to secondary industries would be beneficial to New Zealand” was held in the Timaru Catholic Club’s Hall on Thursday evening between teams from St. Joseph’s Debating Society, Waimate, and the Timaru Catholic Club. Timaru—Messrs M. Daly (leader), Murphy and Hertnon. supported the affirmative. The Waimate team consisted of Messrs J. F. Foley (leader), W. Horgan and W. F. Boland. The judge was Mr S. Black, M.A.. of the Timaru Boys’ High School, and he awarded the verdict to Waimate by 263 points to 242. Batting first, the winners put on 135 runs. T. Meynell (37), G. Wilson (27), W. Spencer (27) and R. Keen (10) being the principal scorers. Waimate B replied with 61, the only batsmen to reach double figures being L. W. Leslie (16) and H. Foster (15). For Morven G. Wilson took two wickets for no runs, R. Keen 3 for 9. and A. Meynell 2 for 23, while for the losers E. R. Chapman took 6 for 49, Leslie 1 for 9, Foster 1 for 16, Keyes 1 for 19 and Neale 1 for 32. Playing at Redcliff, Glenavy and Redd iff played a drawn game. Battingfirst, Glenavy declared with 6 wickets down for 100, C. Fleming (29), and K. McDonald (28) getting most of the runs. Redcliff had 55 on the board for 6 wickets when time was called. C. Verity contributing 27 not out. Bowling honours for Glenavy were shared by C. Fleming 1 for 22. J. Hollamby senr. 1 for 28, J. Hollamby junr. 1 for 10, while the best trundiers for Redcliff were C. Verity 2 for 18. D. Turnbull 2 for 20. J. Finlayson 2 for 21. and L. Wilson 1 for 12. In their match at Manchester Park C.F.C.A. in the first innings against High School were dismissed for 27 runs, to which School replied with 110 (Morrison 34. Foote 19, O. Balfour 12. J. Balfour 11). In their second strike C.F.C.A. fared better and put on 101 before the last wicket fell, Deacon (28), Schraeder (22). and Hansen (14) making the best scores. At the call of time High School in their second innings had 4 wickets down for 34 (O. Balfour 20, Miller 10). For School F. Morrison took seven wickets for 7 runs, and W. Foote 2 for 19 in the first innings, Morrison again doing well in the second innings by taking 4 wickets for 14 runs, the remaining batsmen beingdismissed by Foote (3 for 31). Sawell (2 for 13). and O’Malley (1 for 8). The best bowler for C.F.C.A. was E. Hicks who took five wickets for 18 runs in the first innings and four for 9 in the second. Other figures for the side were Duckett 3 for 28, and Hansen 2 for 4. High School won by 83 runs on the first innings.
