TEACHER’S SUSPENSION

SPECIAL COURT HEARS APPEAL By Telegraph—press Association ASHBURTON, November 16. A special Court consisting of Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., and a nominee of each party, is hearing an appeal by R. J. Thompson, Principal of the Technical High School against his recent suspension for a month. The case is the sequel to a conference between the High School and Technical School Boards regarding amalgamation, following which Mr Thompson published letters criticising statements made. Mr Thompson refused to accede to the chairman’s request to desist, and the Board suspended him. The grounds of the appeal include that the Board has no authority to si -pend a principal; he had not disobeyed a lawful command in relation to his duties, and the Board was exceeding its powers; that the punishment was unreasonable, and out of all proportion to the alleged offence. The attitude of some members of the Board prevented a settlement.
