REVIEW OF THE RACING (Special to ‘‘The T-imaru Herald”) CHRISTCHURCH, October 27. The Banks Peninsula Racing Club had a very successful meeting in every way, the weather being delightful, while large fields provided good sport. In the Okains Trial Stakes Delice was soon in front from Owl’s Gleam, Azevedo, Wino, Capital, Gas Mask and Anvil. When the straight was reached Azevedo retired and Wino got up to beat Owl’s Gleam by a nose with Capital a neck away. Hostis, from P. V. Mason’s stable, ran a great race to be fourth, as he was last away. He is a three-year-old by Honour from Goldspear. The winner is an improving four-year-old. Owl’s Gleam will be good later on. The favourite, Orris, began moderately and was knocked back early. On track form she is pretty good. Silver Step soon headed Hounslow in the Kaituna High-Weight Handicap. Cottingham and Chidden being next, while Monastic joined in five furlongs from home, where Hounslow retired. Silver Step was beaten when the straight was reached. Monastic then took charge and won easily, while Chidden outstayed Cottingham for second. Monastic is in his best form and maybe hard to beat in brush hurdle contests at Riccarton. Chidden stays well and is an Oaks prospect. Myra Chenault set the pace in the Duvauchelle Trot, Waving Corn, Royal Thread, Red Ranger, Wink Eye. Zest and General Sarsfield attending her most of the way to the straight. Waving Corn then shot out and stalled off Zest by half a length, with Myra Chenault half a length back, then Dandy Locanda and General Sarsfield. Of the others Red Ranger may see a better day. Waving Corn was due after some consistent form. Tout le Monde soon took charge in the J. F. Buchanan Memorial Handicap. Some Shamble followed him out of the straight, with Variant and Sweet Agnes heading the others, Ranelagh being last. At the far turn Tout le Monde was joined by Some Shamble, while Argentic had joined Sweet Agnes at the head of the others, with Polydora and Cough next. Tout le Monde retired a little further on, finishing last. Some Shamble led Argentic to the straight, with Polvdora moving up. In a good finish Some Shamble beat Argentic by a head, Polydora being •half a length away. Then came Silver

Sight, staying on well, followed by Cough, who ran her best race of the season. Sweet Agnes was next but tiring. Then came Variant, who is not readv yet. Southdown being next, just in front of Ranelagh. The winner has run several good races this season. Argentic was staying on but so was Polydora. These two both drew attention to their New Zealand Cup prospects. Argentic was sore after the race but his trainer was not worried about it. Iceni set the pace in the Halswell Handicap, with Elbanor, Theatin, Cup Bearer and Gold Cross handy. Golden Cross and Cup Bearer dropped back after two furlongs, where Tuirau moved up. Iceni ran wide at the entrance to the straight and Tuirau shot through to win easily. Knockout came with a late run to get second, a good performance, as she got out slowly. Elbanor tired to third place, while Invoice and Cheap Money were next, and then Theatin, who stopped badly. The winner is an improving hack, but Knockout looks good. Grecian Prince rushed, to the front in the Le Bons Handicap, Cranford, Gaysome, Night Recital, Quietly and Fairway following him to the straight. Grecian Prince then collapsed and Sam Smith came with a brilliant run to snatch a win from Quietly, who had Cranford beaten fifty yards from the post. Sam Smith looks a great prospect for open races, after he has taken on the Spring Plate at Riccarton. Irish Peach made the pace in the Little River Trot, Sky Wink, Subsidy, Great Seaman, War Path and Noble Prince following her most of the way, while Golden Cross joined in when the straight was reached. Fifty yards from home Subsidy made a dash but no sooner had he got his head in front than Golden Cross in turn headed him on the post. Noble Prince was a neck away, with Irish Peach, Grand Author and War Path close up. The winner has always been noted for speed. Subsidy is racing well and will be hard to beat in the Derby. Ironside showed some speed in patches but went unsteadily. Indianapolis from 264 yards behind, paced a good race, but, of course, could not get near the leaders. In the Brackenfield Handicap, Rebel Chief soon headed Golden Dart, with Marquillo, Top Rank and Bella Rosa next, while Heather Glow joined in at the half mile post. Marquillo then retired and Golden Dart drifted back in the straight. Rebel Chief won as he liked, while Bella Rosa, a solid four-year-old mare by Jericho, outstayed Top Rank to get second. Maroha, Earthquake and Golden Dart followed at intervals. The winner’s form was an improvement on Rangiora, where he failed to stay. Streamline ran a creditable race, after being chopped out at the start.
