Eggs, fruit and tomatoes were hurled at Mr W. E. Elliot, Minister of Agriculture, when he visited the Glasgow University Union, accompanied by his wife. Most of the missiles missed the Minister, but a tomato burst over his head and an egg broke on his coat. Water squirted from the students’ gallaries poured over him. Mrs Elliot was struck by a tomato aimed at her husband and dashed with other women from the platform. Mr Elliot pleaded for quiet and succeeded in making a speech.
