WAIMATE

MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL GENERAL BUSINESS A meeting of the Waimate Borough Council was held on Tuesday night. Present —The Mayor (Mr G. Dash), Crs. S. I. Fitch, W. G. Paul, R. H. White, W. F. Boland, S. G. Reid, J, T. Hay, A. W. Good and A. J. Hoskins, The South Canterbury Power Board wrote thanking the Council for information forwarded in regard to the electric heating of glass house and bitumen preheater, which would be of valuable assistance. The Liverpool (England) City Council wrote inviting the Council to cooperate in a movement to encourage the display of flags on Christmas Day. —Referred to the general committee. The Municipal Association of New Zealand forwarded a report on replies to a questionnaire addressed to local bodies on the matter of the rebate of half rates. —Referred to the finance committee. The South Canterbury Highways Traffic Group forwarded a statement of the cost to each local body for the purchase of a set of loadometers, showing Waimate Borough’s portion to be £9/19/6.

The Mayor reported having attended a meeting of local body representatives held in Timaru to discuss arrangements for a suitable welcome to be tendered to the Duke of Gloucester, at which it had been decided to circularise all the South Canterbury schools regarding the Government’s suggested free transport of children to take part in the welcome. It had been agreed that all South Canterbury local bodies should contribute to the address to be presented, and the whole district would be asked to supply bunting for the occasion. The Mayor was thanked for his attendance and report. Mt. John. Mr Dash reported as follows regarding the proposed Mt. John reserve:^ — • I found in official circles in Wellington a strong feeling that the cutting off of the people on Waimate from the hill-tops round the town by private ownership or occupation must be removed. My inquiries were facilitated by the Hon. J. Bitchener. Through his arranging I saw two members of the Cabinet and five Departmental officials at various times. In their hands technical obstacles were tagged for attention, and by their willing assistance the object of our desire brought nearer. Councillors will remember that that not apparent obstacle, the obtaining of the burial place of Tehuruhuru, has taken more than two years. The extension of Mt. John as a probable domain may perhaps not be immediate, but I have pleasure in saying that if in regard to Mt. John the wheels of legal machinery might turn slowly, they are turning very surely indeed.”—The report was received. Mr P. E. Islip, hon. secretary of the Timaru Railway Picnic Committee forwarded an application for the use of Knottingly Park on February ), 1935.—Granted. In Glass Houses? Mr Dash said that the Council often received complaints regarding the size of metal placed on the streets, and recently in passing a residential property he had noticed a number of large stones on the road. He had investigated further, and it appeared that it was a practice amongst generous minded householders to make donations to the borough of the surplus stones from their garden plots. He thought the Council should advise these people that while the spirit which prompts such gifts is appreciated, the gauge of the metal should not exceed one inch. The speaker’s suggestion that the Works Committee should investigate the matter was adopted. The borough librarian (Miss I. J. Strong) reported 6 new subscribers, making a total of 290. Subscriptions paid during September amounted to £2 19s. Hydro Completion Celebrations. Mr Dash stated that while in Wellington he had gone into the matter of holding a fitting ceremony in Waimate to do honour to the Minister of Public Works, Hon. J. Bitchener, and Mr R. H. Packwood, Engineer-in-Charge, Waitaki Hydro, on the com- i pletion of their stupendous undertaking. It was fitting that these men | should receive due recognition, and time would probably not permit this at the opening ceremony. It was proposed therefore to hold the function mentioned on November 12. and he would ask Councillors to keep the night free. DOMAIN BOARD The monthly meeting of the Waimate Domain Board was held on Tuesday night, the chairman (Mr G. Dash) presiding. The curator of Knottingly Park (Mr A. M. O’Brien) reported that the Waimate Silver Band had given a programme of music at the Park, when there had been a large number of visitors who had spent an enjoyable afternoon. The narcissi were looking very well at present. An application had been received from the Salvation Army for the use of the park on Labour Day.—The report was adopted. Mr W. F. Boland suggested that a public meeting should be called for the purpose of discussing the formation of a Waimate Beautifying Society. With public subscriptions, revenue, borough and county grants something might be accomplished at Knottingly Park. He said that he felt sure there were many citizens keenly interested who would make the proposed society a success. The suggestion was left over for discussion at next meeting.
