BANDS CONTEST INITIAL ARRANGEMENTS The Mayor (Mr B. R. Macdonald) presided over a meeting in the Town Hall on Wednesday when arrangements for the Canterbury Provincial Bands’ Association’s annual contest, which will be held at Geraldine on October 6, were initiated. It was decided, on the motion of Messrs E. Undrill and J. Fleming, that those present constitute the Geraldine Band Contest Committee to carry the contest through. Officials were appointed as follows: Patrons, Messrs T. D. Burnett, M.P., and J. Connolly, M.P.; vice-patron, the Mayor (Mr B. R. Macdonald); president, Mr K. Mackenzie; vice-presi-dents, Canon J. F. The meeting agreed that an effort be made to secure donations of medals for award to the winners of various classes in the contest.
On the motion of Mr G. Loach, M. Hopwood, of Ashburton, was thanked for his attendance, and for the valuable information in regard to the Ashburton contest, which he had made available to the committee.
On the motion of Mr Z. O. Sherratt, Mr Undrill was congratulated on his election to the position of patron of the Canterbury Provincial Bands’ Association.
A letter was read from the Christchurch Boys’ High School Band intimating that it desired to compete, and inquiring in regard to the payment of affiliation and entrance fees. The matter was referred to the executive, and it was also decided to endeavour to induce the Timaru Boys’ High School Band to compete.
