High temperatures, which are records for all time, were recorded in many mid-West cities on Tuesday. The deaths total 719. Violent thunder storms, with torrential rain, fell in many parts of the country to-day. London suffered a deluge, and so also did Leeds. In London and the southern suburbs, dozens of houses were struck by lightning and a fire was started on the Hammersmith bridge. The cables underneath the bridge were fused and a 'fire brigade was required to put out the flames. Many roads, including some streets in central London, were for a time inches deep in water, and several local train services were held up. The storms caused no direct casualties although two youths were killed in traffic accidents which were attributable to the weather. Heavy rain has fallen on the south coast during the past few days. Rivers and creeks have overflowed their banks, toads are blocked und large areas of land are inundated. The rain has now ceased but extensive floods are feared if further rain falls. Further inland, the southern highlands are covered by snow. A full of more than two feet is recorded at many places.
