WRESTLING

TO-NIGHT’S CONTEST MAMOS v. SHIKINA The contest between Oki Shikina and Harry Mamos to be held this evening is arousing great interest, as the appearance of the Japanese matman has awaited with eager interest by followers of the sport. The Japanese is an exceptionally fast wrestler, whose spectacular work, together with his sportsmanlike behaviour in the ring has won wide popularity. Shikina is a first-class exponent of both the jiu jitsu and American styles of wrestling. Before coming to New Zealand, Shikina wrestled in America for a number of seasons, both as an amateur and professional. During the last two seasons the Japanese wrestled his way to the forefront of the heavyweight division in America.

Mamos is well-known in these parts and is undoubtedly one of the cleverest wrestlers in New Zealand. The contest this evening will be under what is called the American style of wrestling and with such well matched opponents, a great contest should result. At Christchurch last night Mamos won from Shikina in a bout of catch as catch can and jiu jitsu by two falls to one. To-night’s event will be the first for the New Zealand championship under straight out wrestling rules. An excellent programme of amateur bouts has been arranged, the outstanding contest will be the contest between R. Walton (Timaru), ’present South Canterbury middle-weight champion, and B. Walker, runner-up in the middle-eight division at the last New Zealand championship. The following officials will control the tourney:— Professional bout, referee, Mr M. McKenna; amateur bouts, referee, Mr C. Campbell; timepeekers, Messrs L. E. Eaton and R. McGlashan; announcer, Mr A. N. Oakey.
