RACING & TROTTING

On and Off the Track \ BUDGET OF NEWS AND VIEWS FIXTURES Racing: July 25—Rangitikei Hunt. July 26—Walmate Hunt July 26, 28—Poverty Bay T.C. July 28—South Canterbury Hunt. July 28— Manawatu R.C. July 28—Rotorua and Pay of Plenty. Aug. 4—Christchurch Hunt. Aug. 14, 16, 18—Grand National meeting. Trotting: July 26, 28—Greymouth T.C. Aug. 11, 15 17—Metropolitan T.C. The first race at Walmate to-day is timed to start at noon. A. E. Ellis will ride Curie in the Winter Cup. Tudor will not fulfil Ms engagements at Riccarton. Weights for the Christchurch Hunt Club's fixture are due on Monday. Silver Scom-Peter Pan is the favourite double for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. The appropriate name of Wardress has been bestowed on the filly by Lord Warden from Clink. The annual meeting of the South Canterbury Jockey Club will be held to-night.

Acceptances for the Grand Nationals and the Winter Cup, and entries for other events at the C.J.C. August meeting, are due to-morrow night. Winners at the Hunt meetings this week will not be rehandicapped for the Grand National, Grand National Hurdles, or Winter Cup. Water Power’s trainer is not dissatisfied with her Winter Cup weight and the Washdyke mare is to be reserved for the big mile.

Trains are timed to leave Timaru for the racecourse on Saturday at 11.7, 11.30, 12.5, and 12.40, and will make the customary stops at Evans Street and Smithfteld. The return train is due to leave the racecourse at 4.40. Twelve Riccarton horses arrived yesterday for the Walmate Hunt meeting, and they will be reinforced by another dozen for the South Canterbury fixture on Saturday.

Probable riders for the Waimate Hunt Club’s meeting include the following:—W. H. Jones: Approval, Red Racer, Gold Bay; G. Barr: Starshooter; G. Humphries: First View. Cheap Money, Colossian and Niggerhead; A. H. Eastwood: Doiran, Cleaner; L. J. Ellis: Imperial Spear; A. E. Ellis: Hurllngham and Grando; G. Salt: Coll; G. H. Murfitt: Arcade and Polingham; J. Murfit: Azevedo; D. O’Connor: Eaton Hall, Willow Glen; H. McKinnon: Beau Geste; R. Beale: Black Duke; A. E. Peart: Andy, Father O’Flynn; W. Pascoe: Mount Boa. Great Shot will not fulfil his engagement in the Winter Cup. Subsequent to his winning the Provincial Handicap on the first day of the Dunedin winter meeting, Great Shot was attacked by some kind of trouble which was attended by intense feverishness, and for a time his owner-trainer, F. W. Ellis, was afraid he might lose him. The Last Dart gelding, however, is back to normal health again, but his trouble was responsible for the Grand National trip being called off, and he will not be seen out again until the early spring meetings. At his best, Great Shot would have had more than an outside chance in the Winter Cup.
