ALSATIAN DOGS

“DANGEROUS BRUTES.” By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, July 25. In moving the second reading of the Alsatian Dogs Bill in the Legislative Council yesterday, the Hen. C. J. Carrington said that the dogs were a menace and the breed should not be allowed to be perpetuated. He quoted a number of newspaper reports of attacks by dogs on human beings and farm stock. The usefulness of the dogs did not compensate for the danger to the community. “I am convinced that these dogs are dangerous brutes,” said the Rt. Hon. Sir Francis Bell, who added that a large number of women and children lived in terror of attacks by them. The Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes suggested that the Bill should be sent to the Agricultural Committee of the Council which would hear evidence on the question. The Hon. Sir James Allen said that if the dogs were a menace, the Bill, which provided for sterilisation only, did not go far enough. The total destruction of the dogs should be considered.

The Hon. R. Masters said that if the allegations against the dogs were correct, the Bill did not go far enough. He was informed that the dogs would not become less savage as a result of sterilisation but, on the contrary, it had been stated that the opposite effect was the case.

On the motion of Mr Carrington, the Bill was read a second time and referred to the Committee.
