IMPORTED TOBACCO PROTEST AGAINST NEW DUTY By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, July 25. A deputation numbering close on a hundred from the Nelson and Motueka districts waited on members of the Cabinet to-day to enter a strong protest against the proposal to reduce the duty on imported tobacco. It was claimed by the deputation that if the duties, as set out in the recently introduced customs tariff resolutions, were retained there could be only one result, the total annihilation of the tobacco growing industry. It was asked that the import duty should be fixed at 3/6 a pound with an addition 6d a pound on unstemmed and blended leaf. In replying, the Minister of Customs, the Rt. Hon; J. G. Coates, referred to the dangers of overproducing tobacco in New Zealand and suggested that three or four members should confer with him to discuss ways and means of. placing the industry on a more satisfactory basis. He pointed out that the Government could not forego the £1,600,000 it at present received from tobacco by way of revenue, Mr Coates pointed out that there was difficulty to-day in dealing with surpluses of production and said he had hoped to hgar from the deputation just how the growers thought it was possible to reorganise the growing industry. Tobacco could only be grown on certain types of land and under certain climatic conditions and only a scientific farmer could produce a commodity essential for consumption in New Zealand. Many attempts had been made by the Government to find markets fQ.r the surplus tobacco abroad and so far it had not begn possible to find such markets. Under those circumstances surpluses must always be a danger to the growers.
