CARGO BROACHING
SEAMEN SENTENCED By Telegraph—Press Association INVERCARGILL, July 25. Two members of the crew of the Kumara, William Spratt and John Burgess, pleaded guilty in the Police Court to charges of receiving 10 bottles of whisky, the property of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company. A Customs officer saw a car drive on to the Bluff wharf, into which accused placed a suitcase. Approached by the Customs officer, Spratt removed the case from the car, a bottle of whisky falling out and smashing. Then he threw the case into the harbour, from which it was recovered by the police. It was found to contain 10 bottles of whisky* which were stolen from the boat, having apparently been broached at Dunedin. Accused were sentenced to three months’ gaol, and ordered to be placed on the Kumara when she sails from the Dominion.
