FOOTBALL

BY ONE POINT OTAGO BEATS HAWKE’S BAY. By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, July 25. Otago defeated the touring Hawke s Bay team at Carisbrook to-day in ideal weather. The ground was heavy in places. There was an attendance of about 6000. The game was interesting throughout, although the play was largely dominated by the forwards. The lighter Otago forwards stood up well to their heavier opponents. The visiting forwards got their full share of the ball from the scrum, but their inside backs did not link up too well and the wings got few opportunities. Smith, one of the three-quarters, made some fine dashes and proved himself to be a very determined runner, hard to bring down. He was undoubtedly the best of the backs. For Otago Simon played a fine game at half-back both on attack and defence, but as was the case with the Hawke’s Bay backs, the inside men did not link up too well with the wings, and Dunne, in particular, got very few opportunities to show his speed. The first score came from a penalty kick by Trevathan, and before the end of the first spell the same player kicked another penalty goal. The scores at half-time were Otago 6, Hawke’s Bay Hawke’s Bay’s first try came when Smith made a fine dash down the touch line grounding the ball just inside the corner flag. Otago replied with a try by Lucy, who went over at the end of a loose forward rush. With 15 minutes to go, Hapi scored for the visitors and Bradley converted with a great kick from the touch line. Desperate forward work marked the concluding stages, but the Otago defence held and the final scores were Otago 9, Hawke’s Bay 8. ALL BLACKS ASSEMBLE. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, July 25. The New Zealand Rugby team for the tour of Australia is assembling in Wellington, most of the players from outside Wellington arrived to-day, also the manager of the team, Mr A. J. Geddes, of Invercargill. Some players from the South Island are due tomorrow morning to complete the party, which will leave for Sydney by the Maunganui to-morrow. EXCLUSION OF UNDESIRABLES By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, July 25. “It is a very difficult position and we have not the statutory powers that racing clubs have,” said the chairman of the Management Committee of the Wellington Rugby Union, Mr J. Prendeville, last evening, in moving a motion asking the New Zealand Rugby Union to consider the question of applying to the Government to give sports organisations the same powers as racing clubs at present have, of barring undesirables from their grounds. Tire motion was carried. The discussion followed an incident on a Wellington ground on Saturday, in which a referee was struck twice in the face by a spectator, who, when ordered to leave the ground, refused to do so. Mr Prendeville said that on grounds like reserves, the Union had no control over the spectators, and even on a ground where charges were made, it was very difficult to bar anybody from entering, providing they had tendered their entrance fee. After considering Saturday’s incident, the committee decided to send a copy of the referee's letter to the police with a request that they take action. INTER-COLLEGE MATCH.
