NAVAL DIVISION
SHORTAGE OF BOYS By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, July 25. The Naval Secretary states that some difficulty has been experienced of late in obtaining the required number of beys between the ages of 15 i and 16i, though the recruitings for ratings entered at a later age (over 18) were entirely satisfactory. It was not easy to appreciate why the shortage in the younger class existed and the question would be further examined as soon as it was possible to gauge the effect of a recent modifications in recruiting arrangements. Boys are usually entered half yearly and candidates for the engine room branch once a year, the total annual requirements being about 45 ratings, including candidates recruited from time to time for miscellaneous and smaller branches, Tire standard of education on entry corresponds to that required for the sixth standard proficiency certificate.
