CENTENARY ROAD RACES
“NO VITAL CHANGES,” SAYS ORGANISER MELBOURNE, July 6. The Centenary 100-mile Road Race in October will not be altered in any vital details, said Mr Harry James, when discussing the suggested conference with the League of Victorian Wheelmen to-day. He added that the Dunlop Rubber Co. would, however, be most willing to confer with the league as to general details of the race.
A suggestion was made by a delegate at the L.V.W. council meeting last evening that there might be a modification in the Alpine section from Wangaratta to Omeo, while another mentioned the possibility of the race being handicapped each day after the completion of the various stages. Mr James was emphatic that Buffalo and the Hotham mountain sections would be included in the day’s 153-mile ride, while it was essential that all competitors should be handicapped before the start of the race, which could not be taken piecemeal.
“This is an endurance test and a race for seasoned riders, and not for ‘weaklings.’ ” said Mr Janies with much emphasis. The president of the League of Victorian Wheelmen (Mr L. W. Gale) agreed that there should not be any drastic changes in the course, already decided upon, and the methods of staging the event.
As organiser of th t e Barnet Glass Road Race through Healesville and the Black Spur in September, he said that his company was considering extending their event to two days, and of doubling the prize-money usually given for their annual events from Melbourne to Ballarat and return.
