AUSTRALIA v. UNITED STATES United press Association—By Electrlo Telegraph -Copyright LONDON, July 23. The doubles match of the inter-zone Davis Cup lawn tennis tie between the United States and Australia, was played at Wimbledon to-day. Results:— G. M. Lott and L. R. Stoeffen (U.S.A.) bent 4. H. Crawford and A. K. Quist (Australia), 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Crawford and Quist, in the first set, were unabke to withstand the severity of Stoeffen, who served and smashed ferociously and rattled the Australians by picking open spots. In the second set the long-limbed Stoeffen seemed to be everywhere along the net and made some bewildering Interceptions and won one service game with e, run off almost unsightable aces. Quist played brilliantly In the third set, while Stoeffen, fell into errors in netting his drives. The Australians took the set to the obvious delight of barely 1000 spectators. Crawford lost the opening service in the fourth set to love. Stoeffen followed suit and bad smashing by Crawford lost the Australians the game on Quist's service. The Americans led 4-3 in the seventh game, which provided some dazzling rallies, in which Crawford usually erred. The Australians levelled by again taking Stoeffen’s service, at 4-4. Crawford’s double-faulting lost the ninth game and his short lobbing gave the Americans the tenth game for the set and match. The Australians fought valiantly. Quist was superior to Crawford, but the Americans were too severe. Stoeffen did many brilliant things, while Lott’s generalship and steadiness was always evident. Exhibition Game. In an exhibition doubles match, D. P. Turnbull and H. C. Hopman (Australia) beat F. X. Shields and S. B. Wood (U.S.A.) 3-6, 6-0, 6-4. In the preliminary competition of the Davis Cup Poland eliminated Belgium by four matches to one.
