TEMUKA

FARMERS’ UNION MONTHLY MEETING The Temuka Branch of the Farmers’ Union held its monthly meeting yesterday, Mr A. Bisdee presiding. The president reported that ttfe question of a new basis of rating, by poll-tax, for obtaining Hospital Board revenue as discussed at the last meeting, had been taken up by the Provincial Executive and discussed at the Dominion Conference, where it was favoured. The remit from the branch dealing with the grading of wheat had been taken up by the Executive, too, and members of the Electoral Committee of the Wheat Purchase Board and Board members were now aware of the position affecting the growers of South Canterbury and measures were being taken to give relief. The Meat Producers Board advised by circular that it had stopped the shipping and killing of bobby calf and cull cow meat until further notice. Mr Staniland said that the decision was a serious one to the dairy farmers of the district, in that ihey would have no outlet for their surplus cows and calves. It was decided to endeavour to get an extension of the rennet industry protection subsidy to South Canterbury. Mr Staniland, chairman of the local Pig Marketing Association Committee, reported that the Association had now reached the end of its first financial year and that a bonus would be paid in August. Members discussed the action of local bodies of the Dominion in restoring cuts on salaries, .stating that it seemed premature for such action to be taken. The following resolution was carried: “That this meeting protests against the restoration of cuts by local bodies while so many workers are unemployed and so many farmers are in receipt of a mere subsistence allowance, believing that such actions will retard the economic recovery that is now apparently beginning.”
