CURTAINS
Curtains play a large part in home decoration. They can affect the appearance, the lightness, and even the apparent size of a room. Small windows can be made to look larger if the curtain rods are fixed beyond the window-frames on each side, the curtains being of sufficiently opaque material to hide the deception. When making up curtains of net or lace it is well to remember that they shrink very considerably when washed. For this reason it is desirable to leave a generous hem; so that they can be let down whenever the need arises. Net curtains which invariably look dainty when new are apt to achieve a ragged appearance after washing. This can be overcome if they are starched fairly crisp, and stretched on to their rods while still wet. Curtain pins will pierce chintz, cretonne. and other fabrics much more readily if the curtain pins are first soaped. This has the additional advantage that it will also prevent rust and iron-mould.
