Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., has been appointed to be president of the Assessment Court. Mr H. Mayo, president of the Port Ahuriri Bowling Club, has been elected to a seat on the New Zealand Bowling Council. Messrs A. Millar (Wellington), F. J. Chambers (Ashburton), J. A. Spratt (Dunedin), L. L. White (Auckland), are staying at the Dominion. Mr Justice Smith being still eng-ged on the Commission of Inquiry on Native Affairs, Mr Justice Blair hus been appointed a member of the Second Division of the Court of Appeal. Mr L. Cordner, who has been in charge of the Rakaia branch of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., for the last 19 years, and who has lately been in indifferent health, is retiring on June 30 on superannuation. Mr H. A. Moray-Smith, of the present staff, has been promoted to fill the vacancy. At last night’s meeting of the Timaru Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr T. W. Satterthwaite) made reference to the death of Mr Chas. Groves, an old servant of the Council, he having been employed in the Reserves Department from 1909 to 1926. A motion of condolence with the members of Mr Groves’s family was carried in silence. Mr H. M. Dowsett, research manager for the Marconi Telegraph Company, is returning to England, and arrived by the Aorangi. He has been associated with Marchese Marconi since 1899. In 1906 he established wireless communication between Victoria and Tasmania, a distance of 200 miles, and afterwards at the Christchurch Exhibition installed a demonstration set with a radius of nine ■.iles. In Australia he has been engaged in completing the formation of a broadcasting patents pool.—Press Association message from Auckland. Reference to the death of the Public Trustee, Mr J. W. Macdonald, C.M.G., was made at last night’s meeting of the Timaru Borough Council by the Mayor, Mr T. W. Satterthwaite. The Mayor said that Mr Macdonald was an old Timaru boy, and like many an old Timaruvian, had made his mark in the world, being one of the most efficient officers in the Government service. A motion of condolence with the relatives of Mr Macdonald was carried in silence.
