GRANT REDUCED

COLLEGE COUNCIL TO ENTER PROTEST. By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, June 25. The general grant received by Canterbury College from the Education Department for the year ending in March 1935, will be £3500 less than it was last year, according to advice received from the Department by the College Council at its meeting to-day. The grants will be £ISOO for arts and general, and £3645 for the School of Engineering. The College Council has arranged for a deputation to wait upon the Minister. of Education (Hon. R. Masters, M.L.C.) to protest against the reduction. The chairman of the Board (Mr C. T. Aschman) said to-day that the reduction covered an extra grant made to the College last year. Had the grant been continued this year, the Council would have been able further to reduce the College overdraft. Without the extra money it might be necessary to watch expenditure closely, but it would not mean that any department of the College would have to be closed down.
