AUSTRALIAN TEAM IN ENGLAND

MATCH AGAINST GENTLEMEN. ANOTHER MODERATE TOTAL. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received June 19, 1.10 a.m.) LONDON, June 18. The hottest day of the tour greeted the Australians when the match against the Gentlemen was resumed. Before passing the Gentlemen’s score Australia - who continued batting, lost Chipperfield, who in playing forward was badly beaten and bowled by Read. Barnett went out in attempting to hit a ball from Holmes, and eight wickets were down for 178. Then Grimmett and Ebeling figured in a solid stand before Brown’s leg-break beat Ebeling, who was caught at the wicket. Grimmett and Wall raised 200 in 175 minutes, the latter batting exceptionally well. Australia’s last three innings have been progressively the lowest on the tour. The innings occupied three hours ten minutes. Brown bowled well, improving his Test prospects. The Gentlemen re-opened at 12.30. Dawson was clean bowled by Wall in the latter’s second over. AUSTRALIANS’ GIFT AUTOGRAPHED BAT FOR VISCOUNT LASCELLES. LONDON, June 8. “The Daily Mail” says that the Australian cricketers will present the eleven-year-old Viscount Lascelles with a special bat, fully autographed. They will send it to the Princess Royal’s home immediately. The presentation is being made because the team learned that the boy is very keenly interested in the tour and a diligent student of cricket records. The King knows of his grandson’s devotion to the game, and is also aware of the Australians’ kindly gesture, which has touched him, as it would anv grandfather.
