SATURDAY’S RESULTS The second round of the Mackenzie Sub-Union’s competition was commenced on Saturday in fine weather. In the junior grade, Sherwood maintained its unbeaten record by defeating Southern at Sherwood by 9 points to 5, after a very even game. Ewart, G. Crampton and W. Bray scored for Sherwood, while Simpson scored and converted for Southern. Mr T. Simpson was referee. At Fairlie, Fairlie defeated Aorangi by 11 points to 3. For Fairlie, J. Breen, F. Wilson and J. Collins scored tries, A, Mackintosh converting one, K. Struthers sccred for Aorangi. Mr W. McNarry was referee. In the senior grade, Aorangi travelled to Albury and played a drawn game with Southern, each side scoring three points. Cordes scored for Aorangi and Argus gained a try for Southern. Mr J. S. Roberts Was referee. At Fairlie, the principal g&me was between Fairlie and Pirates, and resulted in a win for Fairlie by 23 points to 10 after one of the best club games witnessed in Fairlie for some considerable time. The public was delighted with the style of play, which was fast and open. For three parts of the game play was very even, but the fitness of Fairlie told in the closing stages, and they secured a commanding lead. The retirement of Robinson (Pirates) also meant a big loss to the team, who were already playing with 14 men. Fairlie v. Pirates. Fairlie won the toss and played with the advantage of a strong sun. Pirates kicked off, and after an exchange of kicks the ball found touch in Pirates’ 25, From the line-out F. Black got possession and gained ground with a good run, but was tackled in possession. From a melee Fairlie were awarded a penalty, Joe Keenan just missing with a good kick from the side-line, a force resulting. From the drop-out E. Black gained

ground for Fairlie, but the effort was countered by Forrester, who brought relief with a long line kick. Another good run by F. Black took play to Pirates 25, but Fleming saved nicely. A great passing rush in which the whole Fairlie line handled was spoilt by the winger failing to take his pass. Pirates took a turn at attacking, and Robinson with a great run went half the length of the field and in-passed to Kerr who was following up fast, the latter going over for a well-earned try, which was converted by Forrester. Pirates 5, Fairlie 0. From the kick-out Kane fielded the return to find touch in Pirates’ 25, and from a Fairlie forward rush Pirates were compelled to force. From a scrum near the corner, Fairlie hooked cleanly, Joe Keenan sending out to F. Black, to E. Black, to Jack Keenan, who scored between the posts. Joe Keenan converted. Fairlie 5, Pirates 5. The kick-out was returned by Woods, and from a penalty against Fairlie play settled at halfway. A good rush by the Pirates forwards, led by Robertson, Kerr and Ellis, had Fairlie hard pressed, a force relieving. From the drop-out Manning made a good solo effort, gaining 50 yards before being tackled. From a scrum Fairlie hooked cleanly. Joe Keenan sent out smartly to F. Black, E. Black and Jack Keenan, the halfback coming round smartly to receive from his brother and score a great try In the comer. His kick missed. Fairlie 8. Pirates 5. From the kick-out even play followed in midfield. A rush by Fairlie forwards was well stopped by Fleming, who picked up and ran through to set his backs going in a good passing rush. Hurst lining near the Fairlie line. Fairlie worked back to the 25, but were here penalised, but Forrester failed with the kick and Fairlie forced. Giddings headed a good forward rush to Pirates’ territory, where Keenan missed from a penalty. Half-time was then called with the score: Fairlie 8, Pirates 5. From a loose rush A. Crampton picked up to score a good try, which Giddings failed to. convert. Fairlie 11, Pirates 5. From the kick-out Pirates immediately attacked, Robertson and Forrester taking play to Fairlie's line. Robinson (Pirates) was injured in tackling an opponent and had to retire. From hard forward play in Fairlie’s 25. Giddings made a great break before transferring to Stevenson and E. Black, the latter crossing for a good try. Giddings failed with the kick. Fairlie 14, Pirates 5. Play swung up and downfield till E. Black lined in Pirates’ 25, when Woods attempted a “pot” from a passing rush and Pirates forced. Prom the drop-out Fairlie set up a passing rush, the ball going to Woods on the wing, who crossed in the corner. Crampton failed with the kick. Fairlie 17, Pirates 5. Good work by the Fairlie forwards took play to Pirates' 25, but offside gave Pirates relief. Fairlie gained possession from the line-out, but a force resulted. Pirates worked to Fairlie’s 25. Fleming fielded a return and after a good run centred, Hurst securing to score a good try between the posts and adding the extra points. Fairlie 17, Pirates 10. A. Kane gained ground with a good run to the Pirates’ 25, and from a ruck Rex. Crampton scored. A. Crampton’s kick missed. Fairlie 20, Pirates 10. Robertson and Mackintosh took play to Fairlie’s 25. but A. Kane and F. Black gave relief. Taking the ball in his stride. T. Creighton ran right through the opposition, but lost possession. F. Black picked up and dummied his way through to score. Keenan failed to convert. Fairlie 23, Pirates 10. Time was then called. Mr W. J. Burgess was referee. The draw for next Saturday is as follows: — Senior—Pirates v. Southern, at Albury; Aorangi v. Fairlie, at Fairlie. Junior —Aorangi v. Sherwood, at Sherwood; Southern v. Fairlie, at Fairlie.
