RUGBY UNION MEETING OF COMMITTEE The weekly meeting of the management committee of the South Canterbury Rugby Union was held last night. Present: Messrs A. G. Knowles (chairman), A. B. Herdman, S. H. Sullivan, W. A. Cumming, S. Williams, H. E. Lawson, A. B. Rowlands, A. Aitken, L. Connolly, J. Lillico and M. J. Angland. Ruling Wanted. The Ashburton Rugby Union again wrote in regard to O. Whiting, asking the South Canterbury Union to see to it that the player concerned played in the proper territory. Mr Cumming suggested that the ruling of the New Zealand Union should be sought in order to finalise the matter. It was stated that according to a letter from the Waihi Club, Whiting was residing in South Canterbury. Mr Lillico said that Whiting was working in the Ashburton County four days of the week. The secretary read the letter from the Waihi Club stating that Whiting was working in the Ashburton County. His home was in Christchurch, but as it was too far to travel, he resided with a mate in the Waihi district. In view of the fact that letters from Timaru and Ashburton had crossed, it was decided to hold the matter over for a week. Sub-Union Match. The Mackenzie Sub-Union wrote stating that September 15 was too late for a match with South Canterbury, and suggested that the match should be played on Thursday, July 19. It was agreed to play the match on July 19. Player Ordered Off. The referee of the junior match, Mr W. L. Richards, reported having ordered a Star player, Whitty, off the field for repeatedly passing remarks about alleged unfair treatment. Whitty was a clean type of player, and he (Mr Richards) thought he had been sufficiently punished. Some members were of opinion that the referee and the player should have been in attendance that night. Mr Rowlands read the rule indicating that in such a case, the player and referee might be summoned to attend. After discussion, a motion was moved that the player and referee be asked to attend next meeting. An amendment was moved that the player be cautioned. The voting was even, and the chairman gave his casting vote in favour of the motion, it being pointed oiit that the player would have to stand down next Saturday. Representative Match. In connection with the representative match at Waimate on Thursday, it was decided that players should assemble at the secretary’s office at 12.45 p.m. SATURDAY S MATCHES. LOWER GRADE RESULTS.
