SIR FREDERICK MAURICE’S EXPLANATION. Unlteo Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyr’gbt LONDON, May 22. Sir Frederick Maurice informed the British Legion Conference that the letter announcing that Prince George could not attend the opening reached him on May 14, by which time the unfortunate Press controversy about the Legion administration was taking a new turn daily, accompanied by many Wild statements. Therefore, after taking the best available advice, he decided to keep the letter confidential until the Conference opened, in order to prevent involving Prince George’s name in any unpleasantness. The delegates cheered the explanation.
