FLAW IN TAILSHAFT
DIFFICULT ENGINEERING JOB. By Telegraph—Press Assciation AUCKLANI, May 22. Considered to be the m>st difficult marine engineering Job uiflertaken in the Calliope dock, the work of drawing the tailshaft from the cruifer Dunedin, started this morning. A learing play of three inches at the sternof the shaft vas discovered on Saturdiy and tenders for repair were quickli called. The work will entail the rentval of the shaft of 72ft weighing 13 tons, lifting it to the ground level, transporting it 150 yards to the machine liop, and an inspection on Auckland’s iggest lathe. A new gunmetal sleeve t<j replace the one which is worn deeply must be sweated on and trued up. it is expected that the floating crane will have to be used, working from outide the dock gate. The cruiser was to lave undocked by the end of May, bt is not now expected to be refloated More June 9.
