Popular Economical Service Through Booking By Rail “Through booking by rail” is not restricted to transport of passengers and goods from any station in the North Island to any station in the South Island. The system applies also to goods and parcels consigned from, say, Wellington to Gisborne or from Dunedin to Westport. One booking from the starting station covers the whole operation. It pays manufacturers, business firms, farmers and the general public to take full advantage of the Railway Department’s through-booking facilities. To shape a model of a stately Spanish galleon out of an old lifeboat spar is not a thing that everybody can do and make a good job, but Mr J. Shoubridge, a steward on the Akaroa, has accomplished this, and is the owner of a very creditable piece of work (states the “Dominion"). Mr Shoubridge, who has a decided bent for designing, stated that he had completed the model in his spare time in three weeks. He used only two carpenter’s chisels, a hammer, file and sandpaper. The sails are fashioned out of parchment paper, and a little paint and plaster of paris was used to give the finishing touches. The model is about 3ft long, and, mounted on a base, is about the same height. All sails are set, and 15 guns project from each side of the ship, while there are two others, one on either side of the poop. “Ropes" leading to the masthead are adorned with miniature flags, the insignias of the many troops which in those days the galleons used to carry. Small shields are fixed to the sides of the ship, near the bow, for the same reason. To add a little more reality to the model, plaster of paris in many colours has been plastered in design on the hull. The standard of the Crusaders, and the war flag of Spain, are at the mastheads.
