RUGBY UNION REPRESENTATIVE GAMES ARRANGED The Management Committee of the South Canterbury Rugby Union met last night. Present—Messrs A. G. Knowles (chairman), S. H. Sullivan, J. Lillico. A. E. Aitken, W. Cumming, L. Connolly, M. J. Angland, A. B. Herdman, S. Williams, H. E. Lawson, and A. B. Rowlands. Advice was received from the New Zealand Union that Oamaru had been selected as the venue of the South Island trial game, so that South Canterbury’s application could not be granted. Arrangements had been made for a Maori team to play South Canterbury at Timaru on September 12. It was agreed to write thanking the New Zealand Union for arranging the Maori match. The Permit Committee recommended that the application of L. Ennis (Zingari! to be regraded from senior to junior grade be declined. It was decided to recommend that K. Jefferson (Celtic) be regraded from junior to third grade. The Committee further reported that last Saturday six clubs had played unfiled players. Also none of the senior teams had furnished team slips last Saturday. Mr Cumming stated that the committee had sat up till midnight trying to unravel the players, and suggested that it was time the rule governing the offence was enforced. It was agreed to bring the matter before the notice of club secretaries, and that further breaches be treated drastically. It was further agreed to draw the attention of the Referees’ Association to the matter. Intel-provincial Referees. It was decided to forward the names of Messrs A. B. Rowlands, R. G. Sampson, W. Direen and L. W. Parrant to the New Zealand Union as referees available for interprovincial fixtures. Messrs H. Hoskins and P. O’Connor, delegates from the Pareora Club, appeared before the committee to answer a protest by the St. Andrews Club against their action hr playing E. Anderson, a former member of Marist Club, Waimate, without a clearance. The delegates admitted that a breach had been committed, but pleaded ignorance- of the rules. They contended that a player who played senior grade for a Sub-Union was eligible to play junior grade for a team in the major Union’s competition. After discussion, it was agreed to replay the game at the end of the season if necessary. The Waihi Club advised that A. O. Whiting had notified it that he was residing in the Geraldine district, and had fulfilled his residential qualifications. The secretary stated that the matter had been attended to. Representative Games Arranged. North Otago confirmed August 25 as the date of its return match against South Canterbury at Timaru. It was decided to offer Ashburton September 8 as the date for a representative match against South Canterbury. The Mackenzie Sub-Union wrote asking for a match against South Canterbury at Fairlie on June 30. It was decided to offer September 15, if the match cannot be arranged for a Thursday before that date. The Waimate Sub-Union wrote offering June 21 as the date for its match against South Canterbury at Waimate. It was stated that a return match at Timaru would be appreciated. It was agreed to accept the date. The Otago Union wrote expressing agreement with a suggestion that its Sub-Union representative team should extend its tour to South Canterbury and Ashburton, subject to arrangements being made for the New Zealand Union to subsidise the extended tour. It was suggested that the game be played on July 14. It was decided to offer to play the game on a Wednesday, either July 11 or July 18.
