NORTH AND SOUTH
SEPARATE GOVERNMENT MOVEMENT. A copy of a circular that is apparently being distributed throughout the South Island has been received from a body styling itself the "Christchurch Executive of the Central Depot, South Island Separate Government Movement.” The document sets out that South Islanders feel they have been neglected for a long period of years by the Government and states that, unless certain demands are acceded to, it is proposed to petition the King to establish a separate South Island Government. The demands include:— The abolition of alleged exploitation of the South Island in price fixation and commodities. Equal representation in Parliament on the basis of area instead of population. The return of £500,000 belonging to the South Island highways fund and “borrowed” by the Minister of Finance in 1926. Direct shipping and mail services. The construction of canals where required, as at Christchurch. The completion of the whole of the South Island railways at present under construction. The abolition of boards and commissions. The overhaul of the Public Service. The abolition of the Order-in-Coun-cil system. The right of recall of members of the House of Representatives. The restoration of wages cuts.
