“HEAD OF THE FAMILY."
BRITISH PICTURE AT REGENT. j Irene Vanbrugh, the famous British j stage celebrity, has scored an outstand- i | ing success in her first British talkie j “Head of the Family,” which will be | shown finally in Timaru at the Regent to-night. Originality in screen plots j is at a premium these days. Therefore. \ when a picture comes along with such an unusual story as “I Cover the Waterfront,” the United Artists’ production which will start at the Regent to-morrow, it deserves to prove popular. The film gets its title from the name of the daily column written by the hero of the story, the waterfront reporter of a big American paper. There ; are newspaper stories and newspaper i stories—and this is one of the other j kind. For it centres round the hero’s j efforts to “get a story” about a rascally I sea-captain whose trade is smuggling ! Chinese into America so that they can | escape the poll-tax; though outwardly ! he is simply engaged in deep-sea fish- | ing. His method of smuggling is i strange and ingenious in the extreme. ■ The film is filled with tense excitej ment, and many thrilling and unusual
incidents are included. On the acting side it is also very strong, the leading roles being taken by Ben Lyon, the late Ernest Torrence, and Claudette Colbert.
PLEASANT POINT TALKIES. “Harmony Row.” featuring George Wallace. Australia’s leading comedian, will be screened at Pleasant Point tonight. “Harmony Row” is an absolute riot of fun. There will also be variety supports, and a special feature will show the Waitangi celebrations.
