CONCERT AT CAREW CHURCH FUNDS BENEFIT There was a large attendance at the Carew Church when an enjoyable concert was held in the Interests of the Church funds. The Rev. Mr Kirkland, who occupied the chair, explained the position in regard to the finances and thanked the audience for their support. Later in the evening Mr H. C. Barton, on behalf of the Carew residents, took the opportunity to thank the performers, and expressed his indebtedness to the members of the Geraldine Presbyterian Choir for assisting in the programme. The Rev. W. J. Couling, Presbyterian minister at Geraldine, gave a short address. The programme was as follows: Songs, “The Old Shako,” “A Chip of the Old Block” and “The Skipper," Mr H. Cowie; “Coon Song,” “Sing Me Your Song” and “In an Old Fashioned Town,” Miss V. Turner; “Song of the Clock,” “The Mountains of Mourne,” “Captain Mac” and “Friend of Mine,” Mr C. Gimson; pianoforte solo, “Minuet” and “Trio In E Flat” (Mozart); “Song of the Hebrides,” “Roses,” and “A Brown Bird Singing,”. Miss C. Talbot (Fairlie); “Annie Laurie” and “Bird Song at Eventide,” Mrs Donaldson; sacred solo. Miss Taylor; “Mary Carmichael and Me,” the Rev. Mr Taylor; glee and Maori item, Rev. Taylor’s party. Mr C. S. Davies acted as accompanist. At the conclusion of the programme an enjoyable supper was provided by the ladies. MISSION SERVICES. • The evangelical missions by students of Theological Hall, Knox College, Dunedin, throughout the Presbyterian Churches of South Canterbury, were commenced at the Geraldine Presbyterian Church on Sunday when there were large congregations. Mr K. Evans conducted the morning service, Mr S. McDonald delivering an address to the children and to the adults. At the evening service Mr McDonald conducted the service, Mr Evans being the preacher. At the evening service Miss Miller, of Christchurch, sang two solos. The mission will continue each evening, with the exception of Saturday, and will conclude next Sunday. NO ELECTION NECESSARY. As the nomination of Mr Hugh J. D. Acland to represent the Peel Forest Riding on the Geraldine County Council, in the place :f Mr J. M. H. Tripp, who resigned owing to illhealth, was the only nomination, the Returning Officer (Hr A. A. Readdie) has accordingly declared Mr Acland duly elected. PERSONAL Mr and Mrs F. W. Maddox, who returned recently from a visit to Lake Tekapo, left yesterday for Christchurch. Captain T. R. Moore, of the Geraldine corps of the Salvation Army, has received notice of his appointment as an honorary officer under the Child Welfare Act. Miss M. Cruickshank, Raukapuka, has returned from a visit to Lake Tekapo. Miss C. O. Ewings, who has been the guest of Mrs Maurice Baker, returned to Timaru yesterday. Miss Miller, Christchurch, is the guest of. Mrs F. R. Flatman, Woodbury. HOCKEY. The following is the draw for the women’s hockey matches on Thursday:—Winchester v. Temuka, at Temuka, 2.30 p.m. Geraldine a bye. CROQUET CLUB. At a euchre-party conducted by the Geraldine Croquet Club, the prizes were wc;i by Mrs D. Callanan and Mr F. Tiplady. Consolation prizes were won by Miss A. Kerr and Mr P. Spencer. At a meeting of the Croquet Cluq, the president (Mrs B. Hayes) and captain (Mrs W. H. Broad), were appointed delegates to the annual meeting of the South Canterbury Croquet Association in Timaru this week. CITIZENS’ RIFLE CLUB.
