EVENING COIFFURES
The coiffure for the evening is now a very different affair from that of the day. It must strike a note of elegance and importance, and hair-ornaments of every kind have been pressed into service for this end. Many of these bandeaux are extremely costly affairs, and designed by artists and made by first-class jewellers. Semi-precious stones are used and the settings are exquisite. Jewelled berettes have also returned to favour, after years of outer darkness. They are undeniably becoming, and if they are chosen with judgment they add a definite note of elegance to the coiffure. Naturally the type of hair-ornament in fashion these days is limited by the short hair vogue. There is no prospect of a return to the upstanding combs, the jewelled daggers, and the poised butterflies that adorned the chignons of the Edwardians. One needs the secure anchor of a coil f long hair for such conceits. But our heads are definitely to be the background for lavish adornments for some time to come. It would be a profitable amusement to turn out old jewel cases and see if any of the hoarded treasures are worth re-setting to suit the new mode.
