MELBOURNE SERVICE
USE OF MAHENO DEFENDED By Telegraph—Tress Association WELLINGTON, May 21. The use of the Maheno for reviving the Bluff-Melbourne service was defended to-day by the Minister in Charge of the Tourist Department, Hon. Adam Hamilton. Having consulted authorities and secured a good deal of information, the Minister said that he was confirmed in his previously expressed opinion that the statements made by the Dunedin deputation that no service was preferable if it involved the use of the Maheno was exaggerated language, and would, if accepted as correct by the ger ral public, prejudice the success of the venture. Present indications did not suggest that the Union Company wus sure to make a profit on its enterprise, so taking it all in all, it was a matter for satisfaction that the service was to be given a trial with a steamer which, in spite of the hasty criticism, would be, he felt sure, reasonably good for the purpose.
