GERALDINE

HOCKEY REFEREES ANNUAL MEETING’ The president (Mr J. Henry) occupied the chair at the annual meeting of the Geraldine County Hockey Referees’ Association. Annual Report. In his annual report the president stated that the Association had so far fulfilled the purpose for which it had been formed, members having controlled all games played in the Hockey Sub-Association’s competition. The control of the games at the annual tournament had been solely in the hands' of the Referees’ Association. A letter of appreciation, including a donation of £l/17- had been received from the Sub-Association, which showed that the Referees’ Association was doing good work. Three meetings had been held during the year, and various knotty points concerning the game were discussed. Messrs A. W. Tucker and L. J. Bennington supervised the refereeing of some of the games during the season, and, at a subsequent meeting, they pointed out mistakes made by referees during the games. Their general opinion had been that the refereeing, as a whole, was of a fair standard. It was to oe hoped that the coming season would prove a successful one, and that everything would go as smoothly as it had done in the past. The balance-sheet disclosed a satisfactory credit balance. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted on the motion of Messrs Z. O. Sherratt and H. J. Bowkett. Election of Officers. The election of officers resulted: President, Mr J. Henry (re-elected); committee. Messrs C. C. Knight, A. Mackay, H. J. Bowkett. Z. O. Sherratt, L. J. Bennington, A. G. Bryant, C. S. Davies, A. W. Tucker, H. Cowie, J. Buckley, and Canon J. F. Course.v, and Messrs F. Smith and W. Searle (Temuka); appointment committee, Messrs J. Henry, A. Mackay and H. J. Bowkett; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr H. J. Bowkett; delegate to Geraldine County Hockey Sub-Association, Mr J. Henry. Unwarranted Appealing. Mr Z. O. Sherratt referred to the amount of talking during the games, wliich arose principally through players appealing to the referees, and this odious practice was usually indulged in by the team on the defensive, when the attackers were in a good scoring position. These appeals were entirely unwarranted, and, with a view to checking the practice he would move “that, providing a breach actually did occur and any player appealed, the referee would not blow his whistle.” The motion, which was seconded by the president, was carried unanimously, and the secretary was instructed to forward a copy of the resolution to the Geraldine County Hockey SubAssociation. On the motion of Mr H. J. Bowkett a vote of thanks was accorded to the retiring secretary and treasurer (Mr H. Cowie) for his services during the year. A motion of thanks was also extended to the president, and to Mr H. J. Bowkett for the use of his room for meetings. GOLF. The second round of the bogey competition for the Sharpe Cup was played on Saturday afternoon. The best cards were returned by Miss M. Rattray 4 down and Miss P. D. Sharpe 5 down. “HARMONY ROW.” George Wallace, Australia’s leading comedian will appear in a lively farce entitled “Harmony Row” at the Municipal Theatre to-night. An unusually strong supporting programme will comprise the J. C. Williamson Grand Opera Orchestra in the overture from “Carmen.” Violin selections by Peter Bornstein and songs by Beryl Walker, a well-known soprano Variety gazettes will also be screened, and the scenic will show the beautiful coral beds on the Great Barrier Reef. Mackay) will watch the play with a view to choosing the senior and junior teams to play the South Canterbury Hockey Association’s teams in the annual matches at Timaru on Monday June 4.
