A HUNDRED YEARS AGO
WAITANGI CELEBRATIONS. The ceremonies held at historic Waitangi marked an epoch for New Zealand. Life was primitive indeed in those “good” old days when our forefathers foregathered on the shores of the beautiful Bay of Islands, and the loyal and noble Maoris swore allegiance to the Crown of England. How few of the amenities of modern life were enjoyed in those days. The tobacco they smoked was undoubtedly coarse and harsh, when compared, for example, with the Red Shield and Blue Shield that are now so widely popular among pipe smokers in the Dominion. Red Shield Dark and Blue Shield Medium are New Zealand tobaccos at their best, “toasted to a turn” for cooler, sweeter, more satisfying smoking.
