LONELY VIGIL IN FROZEN SOUTH
REPORT FROM LEADER OF EXPEDITION REAR-ADMIRAL BYRD’S EXPERIENCES United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received May 20, 6.30 p.m.) LITTLE AMERICA, May 18. From the Bolling advance base, Rear-Admiral Byrd continues to report “all well” with temperatures fluctuating* between 20deg. and 50deg. below zero. It is revealed that despite the fact that the shack is buried in snow, Rear-Admiral Byrd still takes his daily walk for exercise. As there is nothing in the nature of landmarks near the shack, he carried a bundle of light flag poles, planting them occasionally to find his way back. He has completed the emergency tunnel, in which to exist in the event of being* completely snowed in at the camp. Here the men still find much outdoor work necessary. It is a continual battle to protect the tractors, aeroplanes and other equipment from the driving snow. Improvised shelters not being* completely safe, adequate higher snow walls must be added continually. Classes of the “winter school of the Antarctic,” opened this week under Dr. Poulter, and various scientists, who are instructing the men in the procedure which will follow during the spring explorations.
