NOTES ON THE RACING

Drumfire Defeats Hot Favourite. Colossian 322 w'as backed like a certainty in the Longbeach High-Weight, the only others in three figures being Imperial Spear 187, Grand Review 106 and Bright Shade 100. From a good

start Imperial Spear. Eupator, Grand Review and Weatherly were first to show, and racing round the top Eupator, Imperial Spear, Grand Review and Brown Pearl were clear of Colossian and Weatherly. When the straight was reached Eupator and Brown Pearl appeared to have a slight advantage of Imperial Spear and Grand Review, with Colossian and Drumfire moving up. A fine race resulted in Drumfire getting up to win by a head from Colossian, who defeated Eupator by a similar margin. Brown Pearl was a neck away, with Grand Review close up. Drumfire was very sore, and despite the yielding track and the fact that D. O’Connor was up, he returned a very big dividend, as he carried only £ls/10/-. Adsum At Last. The wayward Methven gelding Wild Dream 293 was first choice in a big field for the Selma Trot, with Adsum 208, Interlude-Ironside 195, Mystery Yet 171, and Cam Dillon 137 in most demand of the remainder. Adsum was first away from Satin Lass, but passing the stand the order was Adsum, Cam Dillon, Secret Service, Guardsman. Malvena. At the mile Adsum and Cam Dillon were live or six lengths clear of Malvena, Secret Service, Guardsman and Realeen, with Mystery Yet piloting the third division. Mystery Yet broke at the seven furlongs, where Wild Dream, who began slowly, commenced to move up. Half-way round the top Adsum and Cam Dillon were followed by Wild Dream, Malvena and Realeen. When the straight was reached Wild Dream raced up to Adsum, but broke under pressure, leaving the Washdyke mare to come away and win easily by three lengths from Ironside, with Cam Dillon three lengths further back. Wild Dream, still tangling, was fourth, then came Realeen and Doris Derby. Adsum on this occasion went away well, and though she threatened to break before going fifty yards, she paced correctly for the rest of the trip. Ironside, who finished strongly after losing ground in the early stages, is one of the Durbar Lodge Sapling Stakes candidates, and will have plenty of supporters for the two-year-old classic. Big Race to Water Power. Davolo (and L. J. Ellis) carried the public confidence in the Autumn Handicap. showing 482 units compared with 268 Water Power and 236 Chrysology. Wise Choice was first to break the line from Chrysology and Quietly, but at the mile Chrysology was in charge from Wise Choice, Cleaner and’Quietly. Davolo headed Quietly at the seven furlongs, and at the far turn he ran into third place behind Chrysology and Cleaner. Water Power was still tailing the field, but was doing her work well. Chrysology led Davolo and Cleaner to the home turn, but when the straight was reached Davolo and Cleaner headed him. Just as Davolo’s supporters became vocal Water Power appeared on the outside and came on to win comfortably by a length and a half. Cleaner was three lengths behind Davolo, with Chrysology and Quietly ahother three lengths away. First Success For Eigindale. P. T. Hogan, following his success with Water Power, provided the favourite for the Trial Stakes in Eigindale 261, but Silk Arrow 247 and Capital 234 were close up in the betting. Tuirau was quickest to jump out, but was quickly headed by Moonbeam, Silk Arrow, Eigindale and Capital. Eigindale led Moonbeam, Capital and Silk Arrow round the top, and when fairly into the straight Eigindale and Moonbeam were clear of the other pair, with Capital, Wild Sky and Tuirau handy. Hard ridden, Eigindale held Moonbeam off to win by a length, with Silk Arrow threequarters of a length away. Tuirau was three lengths further back, two lengths ahead of Wild Sky and Capital. Eigindale showed a good deal of speed as a two-year-old, but he has taken over two years to win a race. Rose of Tralee and Thesnor lost their chances at the start. Win For Nightmarch’s Colours. The withdrawal of Cheap Money and Drumfire left a baker’s dozen to contest the Fairfield Hack Handicap. The favourite selections were Haere Tonu 211, Red Dance 170, Tout le Monde 164, and Star Raider 150. Grand Review, Haere Tonu and Maroha jumped away in line, but at the end of a furlong Maroha and Rebel Chief assumed command from Grand Review, High Rank and Haere Tonu. Racing round the top Maroha, Rebel Chief, Grand Review, Haere Tonu were in the van, with Silver Sight, Red Dance and Star Raider closing up. On reaching the straight Haere Tonu and Grand Review cut down the leaders, and drew right away, Haere Tonu winning by a length and a half from Grand Review, who was three lengths in advance of Red Dance. Two lengths further back came Air Pocket, followed by Sibella and Star Raider. Haere Tonu added a point to the score of L. J. Ellis, the leader in the jockeys’ premiership. Water Power Completes Double. Betting on the Flying Handicap was remarkably even, over Royal Amphora 318, Hurlingham 278, Final Shot 275, Water Power 249, and Fairway 213. Fairway and Final Shot were left at the start and lost all chance. Hurlingham and Royal Amphora led off from Martian Chief and Metal Bird, with Water Power allowed to take time to find her feet. Royal Amphora. Hurlingham and Martian Chief led to the straight in close order, with Metal Bird and Water Power not far away. Royal Amphora shot out two furlongs from home and a furlong from the post still had an advantage of two lengths from Hurlingham and Metal Bird. Then Water Power put in her claim, and quickly overhauling Royal Amphora she beat him with something in hand by half a length. Hurlingham was third, three lengths away, a length ahead of Metal Bird. Water Power carried a penalty of 91b, but even so her backers collected a nice dividend. She gave P. T. Hogan his third win of the day, and made the fourth victory for Washdyke horses. Fairway raced up to the tail of the bunch at the half-way mark, but could not sustain the effort. Favourite Unlucky. The Rakaia Trot saw the first pool of the day of over a thousand. The final balance sent Impostor over 200 units above Llewellyn’s Pride, who was 50 chances above Sky Wink. Ezywurk and Sky Wink declined to leave the mark. Thornworthy shot out quickly and crossed from a wide-out position to the rails, but after a furlong had gone by the order was Llewellyn’s Pride, Impostor, Thornworthy, Tollgate, Realeen, Modern Lady, Wild Dream, Royal Audo. Realeen broke at the eastern bend, and ; passing the mile post the leaders were Llewellyn’s Pride, Impostor, Modem : Lady, Thornworthy and Tollgate. There was no change at the far turn, where Harvestin and Royal Audo were at the head of the remainder, but racing to the home turn the reading was Llewellyn’s Pride, Modern Lady, Impostor. Tollgate, Thornworthy, Harvestin. | Llewellyn’s Pride led up the straight from Modern Lady and Impostor, the last-named being boxed in on the rails | behind the leader. Half a furlong from home Llewellyn’s Pride shook off Modern Lady and Impostor got clear, but the favourite had not time to overhaul Llewellyn’s Pride, who beat him by half a length. Harvestin was third, three lengths behind Impostor, with Tollgate and Modern Lady necks further away. Llewellyn’s Pride led practically all the . way, but appeared to be a trifle lucky : to beat Impostor, who pulled hard i throughout and was shut in until too l late.
